Kerry Jane Wilson

Media release 29 August 2016 I confirm that Kerry Jane Wilson, who was abducted in Afghanistan in April this year, has been released, and she is now safe and well. I am relieved for Kerry Jane, and her family with whom I have remained in close contact. Council for Australian-Arab Relations 2016-17 Grants

Media release 29 August 2016 Today I announce the recipients of 12 new grants funded by the Council for Australian-Arab Relations (CAAR). The CAAR seeks to broaden and strengthen relations between Australia and the Arab world. This round of grants totals over $300,000 and supports the Government's public and economic diplomacy goals. Ambassador to Germany

Media release 26 August 2016 Today I announce the appointment of Ms Lynette Wood as Australia's next Ambassador to Germany, with non-resident accreditation to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Germany and Australia have a close and productive relationship, sharing common strategic and security objectives. Additional humanitarian assistance to Myanmar

1 August 2016 Myanmar continues to face humanitarian challenges with more than one million people requiring humanitarian assistance this year. I discussed Myanmar’s humanitarian needs with my counterpart, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Terror Attack in Nice

The Australian Government condemns the Bastille Day attack in Nice which has left many people dead and injured. Once again we stand resolutely with the people of France. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the victims and their families. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to Australians caught up in the attack and are urgently seeking to determine whether any other Australians have been affected. ASEAN Ministerial Meetings in Laos

I will visit the Lao People’s Democratic Republic from 24 to 27 July to attend the East Asia Summit (EAS) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the ASEAN-Australia Ministerial Meeting and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). The EAS is the premier forum for strategic dialogue on regional issues.  At the EAS I will discuss the political, economic and security challenges facing our region, including maritime security, the South China Sea, the Korean Peninsula, non-proliferation and countering violent extremism. Situation in Turkey

The Government is monitoring reports of a possible attempted military coup unfolding in Turkey. We are in contact with the Australian Embassy in Ankara and I have spoken this morning with our Ambassador James Larsen as we seek to determine the facts as the situation unfolds. It is currently highly fluid. Our priority is the safety of Australian citizens in Turkey.
