The Electorate

06june-kingsparkdrive.smThe federal electorate of Curtin is home to over 142,000 people and covers about 104 square kms of the western suburbs of Perth.

Bordered by the city to the east, the Indian Ocean to the west, the Swan River to the south and Scarborough Beach Road to the north, the electorate is renowned for its natural beauty and lifestyle.

Tourists from around the world visit Curtin's spectacular beaches which span from Cottesloe to Scarborough, and important landmarks including the iconic Kings Park in Crawley and Bold Park in City Beach.

Curtin includes the suburbs of Churchlands, City Beach, Claremont, Cottesloe, Crawley, Daglish, Dalkeith, Doubleview*, Floreat, Glendalough, Innaloo*, Jolimont, Karrakatta, Kings Park, Leederville, Mosman Park, Mt Claremont, Mt Hawthorn, Nedlands, North Perth*, Osborne Park*, Peppermint Grove, Perth*, Scarborough*, Shenton Park, Subiaco, Swanbourne, Wembley, Wembley Downs, West Leederville, West Perth* and Woodlands. History of Curtin

Established in 1949 the electorate was named after Australia’s wartime and Western Australia’s only Prime Minister, John Curtin (1941 – 1945). Previous members to represent the seat of Curtin:

  • Allan Rocher (1981 – 1998)
  • Vic Garland (1969 – 1981)
  • Paul Hasluck (1949 – 1969)

02feb-uwa.smThe electorate is mainly residential, but there are also three universities situated in Curtin including Perth’s oldest university, The University of Western Australia and the Churchlands and Claremont campuses of Edith Cowan University and Curtin University’s Shenton Park campus.

Within the electorate there are 61 schools - 11 Catholic schools, 16 independent schools and 34 state government schools.

Curtin also has a number of major hospitals including the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and QE II Medical Centre, Princess Margaret Hospital for Children and King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women.

Curtin is a great place to relax and enjoy life. The retail and nightlife areas of the electorate can be found in Claremont, Subiaco and Leederville.

Landmark hotels in Curtin include the Albion Hotel, Ocean Beach Hotel ("the OBH”), Cottesloe Beach Hotel, Subiaco Hotel, Oxford Hotel, the Leederville, the Wembley Hotel and the Paddington Ale House.
