Parliamentary Statement - North Korea
Monday, 25 May 2009
Ms JULIE BISHOP (Curtin) (3.57 pm)—On indulgence: there are media reports, as the Minister for Foreign Affairs said, that North Korea has conducted a nuclear test. There are also reports coming out of South Korea just half an hour ago that North Korea has also conducted a short-range missile test.Appropriation (Parliamentary Departments) Bill (No. 1) 2009-10 - Second reading speech
Monday, 25 May 2009
Ms JULIE BISHOP (Curtin) (12.45 pm)—Two weeks ago, Australians witnessed the tale of two budgets. Over in Western Australia, where I come from, the Liberal-National government delivered a responsible budget with a budget surplus. It also introduced initiatives to support business, initiatives like a break from payroll tax over the next couple of years. So we were able to witness what a Liberal-National government can do in delivering a responsible budget in difficult economic times. Over here in Canberra, the Rudd government achieved what had previously been thought impossible. Its budget made even the Whitlam government look fiscally responsible. I know that Labor is about rewriting Labor Party history, but this—making the Whitlam government look fiscally responsible— was an extraordinary way to do it.
Address to the 2009 Future Summit - "Navigating the challenges ahead"
Tuesday, 19 May 2009
Today I will speak about the security challenges facing western democracies including Australia and the inherent tension between the long term nature of such challenges and the short term nature of the political cycle.
How can a democratic nation maintain a military presence for example in a radicalised failing state for a sufficient period of time to combat the security threat posed by that failing state without losing the support of the public back home?
Matters of Public Importance - 2009/10 Federal Budget
Wednesday, 13 May 2009
Ms JULIE BISHOP (Curtin) (4.20 pm)—This government carved out a sorry place in Australian political history last night, for in just 18 months this government has caused the biggest budget turnaround—from surplus to deficit—in living memory, and it has run up the largest public net debt since World War II. That is the legacy of this government. With apologies to Winston Churchill: never in the field of Australian government finances has so much been squandered so quickly for so little benefit.Shadow Ministerial Statement - Humanitarian Crisis in Sri Lanka
Tuesday, 12 May 2009
Ms JULIE BISHOP (Curtin—Deputy Leader of the Opposition) (4.07 pm)—The coalition supports the efforts announced by the Minister for Foreign Affairs to help civilians caught up in the humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka’s north. We welcome the minister’s announcement last Friday, 8 May of a further $10 million in humanitarian assistance to meet the critical needs of civilians affected terribly by this conflict, particularly those in displaced people’s camps or those near the conflict zone.More Articles...
