PNG ferry tragedy

The Coalition supports the decision of the Government to provide assistance to Papua New Guinea as it searches for survivors of the ferry MV Rabaul Queen, which is believed to have sunk during a journey between Kimbe to Lae this morning.

With up to 350 people reported to be missing, it is vital that every effort is made to locate and rescue any of the people in the water.

The Coalition extends its sympathies to the families of those on board the MV Rabaul Queen and extends its support to the efforts of PNG and Australian rescuers.

While there are no reports that Australians were on board the vessel at this stage, it may be some time before the extent of casualties and the identities of all passengers are known.
