Visit to Australian War Memorial with John XXIII students

Wednesday, 15 May 2013

Today I joined students of John XXIII College at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra where we participated in a wreath laying ceremony in the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier.

On the Roll of Honour here there are over 102 000 names of those who have died in wars and conflicts. 46 000 soldiers died on the Western Front in WW1, many of whom had an unmarked or no known grave – the Tomb of the Unknown Australia Solider is our tribute to them.

We are a peace loving country and we live in freedom. We owe thanks to those who have made it possible.

Centenary of ANZAC Grants Now Open!

Julie has officially opened applications for funding from the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program.

“The Centenary of ANZAC will be the most significant national period of commemoration in our nation’s history”, she said.

“Locally, our community will work together to ensure that we pay appropriate tribute to the thousands of locals who answered the call to serve their nation and the hundreds who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our collective values and beliefs.”

“These ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program grants will give the community the opportunity to honour service and sacrifice.  There are many different ways this can be done – from traditional dawn services and marches of veterans, through to re-enactments of recruiting marches, school-based education programmes, refurbishing of memorials and honour boards and establishment of new places of commemoration and reflection.”

On Line Opinion Blog | Julia Gillard in her glass house - rewriting history and throwing stones

Thursday, 11 April 2013

Last weekend Prime Minister Julia Gillard gave a speech at the Boao Forum in China.

The audience included President Xi Jinping and other world leaders. I was present along with a delegation of Australian business leaders.

While it was not entirely unexpected, it was disappointing all the same to hear the Prime Minister claim total ownership of the Australia - China relationship.

She lavished praise on the efforts of the Whitlam and Hawke governments, as well as her own, but studiously ignored the contribution of the Howard Government, or indeed any other government, to the current strength of the bilateral relationship.

JULIE BISHOP    Tony  Abbott made a compelling case last night that there is a better way back to good competent government, that can ease the pressure on families and repair the budget while running a strong economy. Tony specifically pledged that there would be no broken promises, no nasty surprises, no lame excuses because people are looking for stable, competent government, believable economic management and that has been so comprehensively trashed under this Gillard Government.

JOHN MCGLUE    Well we’ve seen from your Liberal colleagues in Western Australia in the last few days about how difficult it is to say no broken promises because we’ve seen things change dramatically in 10 weeks in Western Australia.

The Liberals are in Opposition in Canberra, how can you possibly say ‘no broken promises’ when you haven’t actually moved into the Treasury offices as yet?

JULIE BISHOP    Well we will be making promises as to what we believe we can achieve in Government, should we be honoured to be elected, but we will have to wait until we see the final budget costings and they are delivered by the Government a week out from the election. We will be keeping our promises and by doing so we will win the trust of the Australian people.

LINDA MOTTRAM       Julie Bishop, thank you for talking with us today.

JULIE BISHOP    Good morning Linda.

LINDA MOTTRAM       More financial flesh on the Coalition’s plans but we still won’t have full costings until well into the election campaign. That’s asking for a lot of people to take you on trust isn’t it?

JULIE BISHOP    Tony Abbott made a compelling case last night that there is a better way back to good, competent government that can ease pressure on families and repair the budget while running a strong economy.

He did give more detail than I’ve heard in any other Opposition Budget In Reply speech. Specifically we found a way to abolish the carbon tax which will give relief from rising gas and electricity prices but we can also fully retain the income tax cuts and fortnightly pension and benefit increases associated with the carbon tax. So it’s not compensation, these will be genuine tax cuts and genuine pension and benefit increases, fully funded by reductions in government spending that we outlined.

MARIUS BENSON    Julie Bishop, good morning.

JULIE BISHOP    Good morning Marius.

MARIUS BENSON    On the carbon tax, Tony Abbott has been saying for a long time if you don’t have the tax, you don’t need the compensation. What changed?

JULIE BISHOP    Well we are now going to provide genuine tax cuts and genuine pension increases. They don’t need to be funded by a carbon tax and when we abolish the carbon tax that will also give relief for gas and electricity prices. So we’ll fully retain the income tax cuts and the fortnightly benefit and pension increases, it’s not compensation, they’re genuine tax cuts and fully funded by reductions in government spending.

MARIUS BENSON    But there seems no economic sense, given Tony Abbott’s previous statement that the logic was – if you don’t have the tax, you don’t need the compensation. Is this pure vote buying?
