Get running for breast cancer research

Mother’s Day Classic Ambassador and Federal Member for Curtin Julie Bishop will be joining thousands of Western Australians again this Mother’s Day to raise money for National Breast Cancer Foundation research programs.

Inaugurated in 1998 the Mother’s Day Classic is a national event that has raised $10.8 million for medical research while raising awareness of breast cancer in the community.

Ms Bishop has been involved as an Ambassador since 2008 and said money raised will help Australian researchers improve detection and treatment of this disease.

“One in nine women will develop breast cancer in Australia, and by 2015 over 15,400 Australian women a year are estimated to be diagnosed with the disease,” Ms Bishop said.

“Early detection and improved treatments greatly increase the chances of surviving the disease and I encourage local residents to get behind this amazing cause to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.”

The Perth Mother’s Day Classic involves a 4km and 8km walk and run around Langley Park.

Ms Bishop will deliver an opening speech at 7.30am and officially start the 8km run at 8.10am.
