Budding geoscientists in Curtin

Curtin’s Presbyterian Ladies’ College (PLC) has been named runner-up in the Junior Category of the 2011 Geologi Short Film Competition.
Coinciding with the annual international Earth Science Week celebrations, the Geologi Short Film Competition was open to all primary and secondary students across Australia, and co-hosted by Geoscience Australia and the Australian Science Teachers Association.Federal Member for Curtin Julie Bishop said PLC’s 2011 entry, Science Rocks, was the third time the school had been recognised in the competition.
“I congratulate PLC students Noa Gubbay, Alice Ford, Cara Donnelly and Isabella Leunig on their outstanding achievements in promoting the important role Earth Sciences play in our everyday lives,” Ms Bishop said.
“As a resources and energy rich country much of Australia’s economic wealth and prosperity relies on our natural resources.
“It is important that young Australians understand the crucial role that geoscientists play in maintaining our energy security and I applaud Presbyterian Ladies’ College in engaging its students in the study of Earth Sciences.”
In 2009 PLC won the Junior Category of the Geologi Short Film Competition for its project Oil, and the 2008 Junior Category for its project Tornadoes.

Winner: Wynyard: Created from Chaos by Table Cape Primary School, Table Cape, Tasmania
Runner-up: A Volcano in Our Backyard? by Fraser Primary School, Fraser, ACT
Highly commended: From a Rock to a Can by Summer and Troy Rees, Numeralla, NSW
Junior Category (Year 7 – 10)
Winner: Red Dirt by St Joseph’s Regional College, Port Macquarie, NSW
Runner-up: Science Rocks by Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Peppermint Grove, WA
