Swan-Canning River Basin Real Time Management System presented to the Hon. Julie Bishop

Swan-Canning River Basin Real Time Management System presented to the Hon. Julie Bishop

Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Federal Member for Curtin Julie Bishop visited the Centre for Water Research (CWR) based at The University of Western Australia on Monday, May 3rd to receive a briefing on the Centre's real time management system that is currently in use in the Swan-Canning River Basin.

The system collects real time data about what is happening in the Swan-Canning River Basin and therefore has the capacity to track the impact of a range of activities and events on the health of the Swan-Canning River system.

Over the last few weeks, the real time management system has revealed the extent of the impact of the Fremantle Harbour dredging along the coast and into the Swan River. CWR's modelling shows that the spill is moving all the way up the coast along Perth's popular beaches up to Trigg and into the Swan up to Perth waters.

“CWR’s modelling clearly demonstrates the impact that both natural and man made events can have on our waterways,” she said.

“I was particularly interested in the community engagement aspect of the public website that the Centre has built for the specific purpose of keeping the public informed about what is happening to their coast and river.

”I was also impressed with the Centre's real time capabilities and its engagement with local school communities, including St Hilda’s, Presbyterian Ladies’ College and Christ Church Grammar School, which allows students to provide their personal feedback and experiences with the environment through the website.

“I congratulate the Centre and its staff on the impressive work that it is carrying out,” she said.
