Get involved this Mother's Day

It is less than a month until the 2010 Mother’s Day Classic and the event’s Ambassador Julie Bishop is encouraging Curtin residents to register early for this year’s event.

The Mother’s Day Classic is a national event which raises money for breast cancer research while improving public awareness and understanding of the disease.

“Breast cancer has a profound effect on the community, with one in nine Australian women diagnosed with the disease by the age of 85,” Ms Bishop said.

“I encourage local residents to get together with family and friends, slip into their trainers and join me at Curtin’s Lake Monger this Mother’s Day to help raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

“It is important that we continue to support breast cancer research funding so we can find a cure. There must also be heightened public awareness about the disease and the significance of early diagnosis,” she said.

Perth event organisers expect around 5,000 participants to walk or run the Lake Monger route this year, and over 100,000 people to participate nationally.

Last year’s Mother’s Day Classic raised $1.3 million for the National Breast Cancer Foundation with the funds going to Australian researchers working to develop a cure.
